Wear a du-rag when you are not brushing. When you are sleeping make sure your du-rag is on. Maintain your waves with a plastic bag rather than your hands as much as possible. Simple things make things easier for the whole process. Taking care of your hair by washing it, getting trims and tapers weekly are important to maintaining waves and to make it easier for your hair to lay down. Just because you can wolf easier in the fall and winter doesn't mean you should just over-wolf either. Keep your hair laid all the time. I learned that washing n styling can bounce you back from a rough wave day and help keep your hair easier to lay down. You should do that whenever your having trouble with frizz and days when your hair is caked up with products making it hard to lay down. Don't forget that waves are just laid down curls. Train your hair to lay down.
