Types of Brushes for Waves

Soft Brushes- are great for low cuts. Soft brushes do not penetrate to scalp as well as a medium or hard brush. A soft brush should be seen as something you use as a polisher. A polisher is something you use at or towards the end of a brush session even at the beginning. One the best brushes to choose to brush your hair without causing a lot of frizz its basically going to smooth everything out sort of like of a medium. But the difference lies in a medium being a lot more firm and will get down more to the scalp. So, if I were to use a soft brush anytime you want to cause minimal frizz in your waves that's when you choose to brush with a soft brush. Use it like a polisher since its soft it is probably not going to be your main brush to achieve patterned waves but it can help with adding luster and laying your hair down. A true soft brush will not really penetrate your scalp but it will brush the hair on top. I am a coarse hair waver so in my beginning stages I was told countless of times that soft brushes shouldn't be used. But, in my opinion it can be used but its all about how you use it. Knowing your brushes and use them to your advantage and it will help your waves look better.

Medium Brushes- are great for all stages. A true medium is built to last. Medium brushes should be used for all stages of your wave journey in the beginning and on. It can be used in beginning stages, low cuts, fresh cuts, wolfing and even heavy wolfing. Medium come in different ways but a "true medium" is the same way of saying the "best brush". The medium brush can be soft medium or hard medium and many brushes will tell you what they are on the package or you can feel it when you brush with it initially and overtime how it reacts to your waves. When trying to find a good medium go by how the stiffness, the firmness, and the pull the bristles give react to your hair. If the bristles are firm enough, stiff enough to bend, and pulls the hair to the point to where it hits the scalp yet doesn't hurt your scalp/irritate too much its probably a great medium brush to use. The key is the scalp. A soft brush does not/ rarely irritate the scalp. A hard brush will definitely irritate the scalp. Since, waving at its finest is about finding what works for you its important that you find this through actually trying brushes. Many brushes claim to be a medium ,soft, or hard but it all goes down to what it does to your hair at certain stages of your hair growth. Another way to test this out is by going by how it feels at a fresh cut when you first begin your journey a medium brush will feel amazing on your head if its too hard you will know. As weeks go on through wolfing, do the same thing you will see if it a medium by how soft it is or how hard it is when wolfing. When wolfing if its too soft you will be able to feel it. On a fresh cut, if its too hard you will be able to feel it. A medium brush has balance and should be used for waving at all stages.

Hard Brushes- are great for wolfing and wolfing only rarely will you need to use hard brushes when you are not wolfing or washing your hair. A true hard brush has no reason touching your head at a low cut or fresh cut unless your still wolfing. The thing about hard brushes is that is made to get down to our scalp, add pull, and reduce the time it takes to lay a lot of hair down to use during low cuts like why? The best times to use these brushes is after completing a comb session when wolfing and you want to lay that hair down that would be a great time to use one. Also, use hard/hard mediums brushes when you are shower brushing/washing n styling a hard brush is good to use. Hard mediums are better to find than true hard brushes but sometimes they can be more hard than soft or vice versa. All in all, use hard brushes when you have a lot of hair on your head (wolfing) to lay down.

  • This is a complete brush breakdown for waves. As your wave journey continues you will use and need all 3 types. Depending on what pattern you have and what you are trying to achieve in your pattern. If you have 180 waves you are probably never going to use a hard brush but may stick with soft and medium brushes. If your goal is to get 360 waves you may use all 3 types of brushes. If your goal is to achieve elite waves you will probably need and use all 3 types of brushes.
